BOPA Vendor Qualification: A Buyer's Checklist

BOPA Vendor Qualification: A Buyer's Checklist

Before a first order is placed, procurement teams ask every candidate BOPA film manufacturer the same questions they ask a trading-house BOPA film supplier: can the resin be traced, will the reels run on our shafts, and will the paperwork survive an audit? This page answers those questions as a repeatable checklist, using the published nylon PA6 BOPA film specification as the worked example.

Vendor Comparison Scorecard

Score each checkpoint from 0 to 10, multiply by the weight, then total to 100. Run the same sheet against at least two vendors so the decision rests on written answers rather than impressions.

Reading the total

85–100: proceed to a trial order and agree a release specification. 60–84: probe further on the lowest rows before committing tonnage. Below 60: decline or re-quote — the gaps usually surface as line stoppages rather than as price.

Module 4

Spec Verification: What to Ask, Why It Changes Your Yield

These are the values published for the nylon PA6 BOPA film. Ask for each one in writing, and attach the expected production consequence so the vendor knows which number you actually run on.

Parameter Value to request Yield / production impact
Thickness 10, 12, 13.5, 15, 20, 25, 30 micron Down-gauging changes stiffness, puncture resistance and barrier in the finished laminate — lock the micron before you price the job.
Inner core 3" (76 mm) and 6" (152 mm) Core diameter must match your unwind shafts and chucks; a mismatch means adapters or a stopped line.
Reel width 300 mm ~ 2100 mm Width dictates how much trim the slitter produces and how efficiently the reel loads into your press.
Reel length 4,000 m ~ 32,000 m (upon thickness) Longer reels mean fewer roll changes per shift on high-speed lamination and printing lines.
Joint ≤ 1 Every splice is a potential web break; a single joint limit is the number to hold the supplier to at speed.
Corona treatment One side or both sides, ≥ 52 dynes Treatment level governs ink adhesion; dyne decay on aged stock shows up as print failure, not as a film defect.
Shelf life 12 months Shelf life sets how much stock you can hold safely and how often you reorder.
Storage conditions Below 25 °C, humidity below 65% RH Heat and moisture drive blocking, curl and treatment loss in your own warehouse, not just in transit.

Release-spec tip

Write the release specification into the purchase order: thickness, reel width, core, joint limit and treatment level. A parameter that is not on the PO is a parameter you cannot claim against later.

Module 5

Capacity and Lead-Time Reality Check

Capacity figures are only useful once you convert them into your own schedule risk. Here is what the published numbers mean for a buyer planning a first or repeat order.

  • Monthly supply ability 1,800 MTs per month — headroom for repeat tonnage without a second vendor.
  • Orientation equipment 6.6 m wide high-speed lines, with sequential, simultaneous and linear motor simultaneous stretching.
  • Delivery lead time 25 days — set your reorder trigger at consumption rate plus 25 days, not at stock-out.
  • Order size and terms Minimum order 2 MTs, price negotiable, payment by T/T or L/C.

Four orientation technologies on wide lines matter for one practical reason: the vendor can quote a width and gauge that fits your converting line instead of forcing you onto a stock size. Ask which process will run your order, and confirm the reel width in the order confirmation.

Module 6

Packaging, Pallet and Freight Configuration

Pallet geometry decides how many reels you unload per container and how much handling your warehouse absorbs. Both core options are shipped with aluminium foil, plywood, plugs, pallets and wrapping film, and both support customized packaging.

3" (76 mm) inner core

  • Aluminium foil, plywood, plug, carton, pallet, wrapping film
  • 9 reels per pallet
  • Maximum pallet height 2.2 m
  • Weight and measures according to roll sizes

Best fit where your unwind shafts are already set up for 76 mm cores and you want the highest reel count per pallet.

6" (152 mm) inner core

  • Aluminium foil, plywood, plug, pallet, wrapping film
  • 4 or 2 reels per pallet
  • Maximum pallet height 2.1 m
  • Weight and measures according to roll sizes

Suits heavier reels and larger-diameter chucks, at a lower reel count per pallet.

Before you confirm the pallet plan

Check the maximum pallet height against your container door and racking clearance, and confirm that the reel count per pallet matches the handling equipment you actually have on site.

Module 7

Compliance and Documentation Pack

Ask for the full document set before the first invoice, not after. A complete pack lets your own quality team release the material without a second round of emails.

Document What to confirm
Certifications FDA, RoHS, REACH, CER and EC documents, current and scoped to the film supplied.
Per-batch COA Issued per batch, with the batch number matching the reel label.
Traceability record Resin grade and lot linked to production dates for your order.
Storage guidance Avoid direct sunlight or drenching, avoid impact, store below 25 °C, humidity below 65% RH.
Shelf-life statement 12 months, counted from production date and shown on the reel.
Origin and terms Place of origin China, processing technology biaxially-oriented, payment by T/T or L/C.

Documentation request flow

Send your order or batch reference, the destination market, and the exact documents you release against. Request reissues whenever a certificate approaches expiry so your file never lapses mid-project.

Module 8

Scenario-to-Specification Decision Table

Match your converting situation to the parameter that should be locked first. BOPA film is normally laminated with PE, EVA, PET, CPP, aluminium foil or paper, so the decision usually belongs to the whole structure, not the film alone.

Your scenario Spec to lock Buyer decision it drives
High-speed lamination with PE, EVA, PET, CPP, aluminium foil or paper Joint ≤ 1 per reel, reel length 4,000–32,000 m (upon thickness) Longer reels and a written joint limit cut roll changes and web breaks per shift.
Rotogravure or flexo printing ahead of lamination Corona treatment one side or both sides, ≥ 52 dynes Ask which side is treated and how the level is measured — dyne decay on aged stock is a print failure, not a film failure.
Retort and cook-in-pouch filling Confirm whether a retort-grade BOPA type and which thickness is required Standard BOPA is not automatically the right grade for a full cook cycle, so confirm the variant before qualifying.
Frozen, chilled and aquatic product packaging Low end of the end-use temperature range (−60 to 150 °C), plus puncture resistance Freezer temperatures and sharp product edges are where punctures and brittleness show up first.
Long ocean transit and extended warehouse dwell 12-month shelf life with production-dated reels; storage below 25 °C, humidity below 65% RH Set your reorder trigger off shelf life remaining on arrival, not off the delivery date.
Mounting on an existing unwind Inner core 3" (76 mm) or 6" (152 mm); reel width 300–2100 mm The core must fit your shafts without adapters, and the width must suit your slitter or press.
Medical device and pharmaceutical packaging Thickness, transparency and gas barrier, plus regulatory paperwork Confirm the certification pack matches your destination market before you qualify the material.
Request for Quotation

Put the Checklist on a Live Quote

Send your structure, thickness, reel width, core size and target market. The reply should carry the specification, the certification pack and the packaging plan in one pass — that is the qualification test, applied.

  • Minimum order2 MTs (2,000 kg)
  • Delivery lead25 days
  • Payment termsT/T or L/C
  • PriceNegotiable against specification
  1. Send the application briefStructure, thickness, reel width, core size, destination market and annual tonnage.
  2. Ask for the specification in writingThickness, core, width, length, joint limit, treatment side and dyne level on the quotation itself.
  3. Request the document packCertifications, per-batch COA format, traceability and shelf-life dating.
  4. Confirm packaging and customizationPallet configuration, reel count, maximum pallet height and any customized packing requirement.
  5. Place the 2 MT trialRelease it against the agreed specification and score the delivery with the checklist above.
